Mike, I'm glad you were able to plow through the snow to attend METC. I was able to attend on Tuesday. I really need to know more about Moodle. Yesterday I learned that Rockwood is using uber online tools to deliver PD to teachers.

Hi Mike,

It's great to hear from you. Diana is one smart lady and is as passionate about educational technology as I am.

I've worked some with Moodle through Diana's SqoolTools and previously with Jim Tice (he passed away recently as I'm sure you've heard) in his quest to provide Moodle to every Missouri teacher. I miss him very much. I also teach a graduate class for Missouri Baptist (Marsha Tierney is one of the directors for the Franklin County branch) so got me involved with that. My course is on the application of technology tools. So one of my assignments is to have teachers set up a SqoolTools account.

A note: East Central is now using Moodle instead of Blackboard for their online classes. Washington is also starting to use Moodle. At this point it is basically being used for teacher online training and committees.

One of the nicest features of SqoolTools Moodle is that students do not have to have an email address. This will be a big protection for you there. You will have the ability to register your students and assign passwords for them.

I think it is an excellent idea to come up with an acceptable use policy of some kind for Moodle chat and Moodle in general. You got me thinking and researching about that, and here's what I've come up with:

1.) Make sure your parents know their child's username and password so they can login to your Moodle classroom also.
2.) Create a committee of students, parents, teachers, and administrators to brainstorm and create an acceptable user policy for your online classroom. Students will have some great ideas for the benefits and pitfalls, especially when using chat.
3.) SqoolTools would need to make sure the Viewing Past Sessions is turned on.
4.) Here is a link with some good safety tips.

5.) Here's a good discussion of Moodle in general, but there are a couple of posts about Moodle chat toward the bottom that are very good.

Hope this helps!

Hi, Mike! Yes, METC was very informative. I am really thinking about how we can use social networking and communication among the masses to work with students. I was really impressed by all of the tools one can use to connect with people and learn from their collective knowledge (Google reader, Ning, Digg, etc.). Tell me about mashups.
